Exclamation

Diaphragms??????

Feb 1st, 2010, 00:51 AM   #1

Has anyone ever tired using diaphragms?

This is the bc I'm thinking on using after having come off the pill. Bit sceptical as none of my friends have ever used them and I don't think it's a widely used form of bc.

Any comments?

Cheers girls

I've used one I have to say I had absolutely no problems with it at all. It can be a wee bit messy (which you just have to laugh at...) as the pessaries "fizz" sometimes (depending on the ones you get, I was - as always - "sensitive" to them and had to get a brand specific type from the clinic) but it's easy to use.

I just saw your other post and you said that the doctor wouldn't put you on the Coil because you've not had a baby? I would go back and ask why, as I had the Mirena for just over 2 years and I've not had children - yet!

What queries do you have ref the diaphragm? Happy to help!

Thanks - I was worried it would hurt or somethin, take it they are very flexible?

When I asked my doc about a coil they said I'd have to go to hospital to have it put in and it all sounded freaky - doc said they can't do it from there cause I've not had kids. Last time I asked before that was just point blank no. Plus would like to be very preg this time next yr so it's just a temporary measure.

Thanks for the info, was scared of the thought of them lol.

Don't know WHAT your doctor is on about...my GP (experienced in coil fittings) put mine in and they knew I was keeping it in for " a while" but took it out after 2 years. Any Family Planning Centre these days should have a qualified "fitter" (sounds like a car mechanic ) and is free. The Mirena Coil was brilliant...

As for diaphragms, not scary at all. They have a ring on the outside of them to hold them in place, and look like a rather large, flat space-disc (those sweeties that were filled with sherbet? But flat and not tasty, or so I would imagine). I found it dead easy to put in, and you can put it in a couple of hours before sex so it doesn't "kill the mood" but you have to top up the spermicide with pessaries/tube of gel (pessaries are the way forward)

Very amusing at times (personally I used to giggle like a loon taking mine out cos it tickled, but don't take my experience as wrote as I am a bit odd at times) and kind of messy but ... I went overkill on the old spermicides as it was NOT the time for me to be getting pregnant, but it went ok.

Diaphragm will need a fitting - you go, get measured (I know, I know...it's nothing like getting a wedding dress though) and then handed a rubbery bouncy thing. Has to be well looked after, washed etc. carefully and all sorts, but it's not the worst thing in the world.

Femidoms - those were the worst contraceptive EVER invented...

love it. My doctors must be jerks and not have a trained fitter at the garage er practice lol. I tried to get an appointment for measuring (not like the wedding dress understood )

Told me no appts available til 18th Feb!! But to phone around 0830 tomoz to see if they can fit me in (pardon the pun)

You've made me feel alot more comfortable about getting one

I do feel certain that I'll be a complete spanner about putting it in without a drama but we shall see!

Thanks again x

Yeah, I wouldn't try that if I were you. Although before it was used, OH tried to use it as a face-mask so watch out for that one

If you can't get it from your GP for a few weeks, try your local FP centre. They did mine in super-quick time (lie and tell them that you're going abroad or something...they'll never know )

I might give this a try after the baby is born. Im freaked out by the thought of the coil too. Something INSIDE my womb that isnt my baby? no thanks! And my mum had my sister whilst using the coil so I dont trust it!

I can imagine the femidom isnt great, apartently sounds like a packet of crisps!!

Surely both of those things are a bit rough for up there too

My stash of OPK's have just been delivered, NEVER seen anything like them before, though they are standard ones, I'm just uneducated.
