How engaged are you?

Aug 1st, 2012, 13:09 PM   #1

I had my 36 week midwife appointment yesterday and baby is apparently 1/5 engaged in my pelvis - I got very excited about the the idea of my LO working her way downwards...but then wondered...how engaged are you??

At my last mw appt I was 37+5, and she wrote in my notes that I was 4/5ths engaged. I was quite excited about this, but the midwife didnt seem to think it was anything special!

I have heard though, that you can go backwards and become unengaged? not sure how much truth there is to this though...

In my notes, in the general explaining bit on the side it says 5/5 is free... :S..
I haven't had my 36 week appointment yet..
She felt this time around on my belly and said his head was down like just above my pubic bone but wrote nothing like 5/5 in my notes or anything.
Not sure how it works tbh

My MW wasn't too excited either but engagement hadn't been mentioned before and I found it quite exciting that something is happening and it feels like we are moving towards the birth - even though I know I have a few weeks to go yet!

Is it when the baby is fully engaged that the baby's head is in contact with the cervix and this stimulates hormones to be released and contractions to start?? I think I learned this at antenatal?!

when I saw midwife on Monday I was a day short of 31 weeks and she said the head was still 5/5ths free which she said was good so im presuming as its gets less free that means baby is starting on its journey towards the outside world xx

Now I'm confused...my midwife said I'm 1/5 engaged....but does 5/5 mean you aren't at all engaged? The way my midwife said it, I took it to mean that I am aiming to be 5/5, that 5/5 means fully engaged??....if that makes sense?!

Yeah 5/5 means fully enaged I'm due tomorrow and at my last mw appointment I was 3/5 engaged and was for 2 or 3 weeks before. I feel I'm deffinately more engaged now as its difficult to walk and kills when sitting to long. Sometimes it feels like I could do a little push because of the pressure lol. Fingers crossed I don't go over too much I want my LO here by the weekend xx

In my notes there's a column that's called "Fifths Above Brim" - at 34 weeks I was 3/5's; then at 36 weeks I was @brim; now I have no idea but I'm have a sweep on Monday so we shall see

Lol this is all very confusing... seems to me that midwives use it either way around, 1/5 coule mean 1/5 engaged or 1/5 free...

But it is nice to have a positive sign that something is happening down there! I am getting to the stage where I just want to get on with it all!

When they write down how many fifths you are, it's fifths palpable, so you have to work out the opposite to see how engaged you are. For example, 3 weeks ago I was 3/5ths palpable (ir 2/5ths engaged). Then bubs decided to change again and the next week I was 5/5ths palpable (not engaged at all). This week I've been 4/5ths palpable so I'm currently 1/5th engaged.

Hope that makes sense!! xx
