A trip to the zoo

Apr 29th, 2008, 22:16 PM   #1

Hi Girls

Me and DH are planning a trip to Chester zoo this bank holiday Monday (even tho it will be heaving and will probably rain LOL ) I love the penguins & monkeys and I'm really excited about going

Anyway, can anyone confirm if it is ok to visit the zoo during pregnancy? I'm probably just being over dramatic about it, but I read that you have to be careful around farm animals and just wanted to make sure it was safe

I have Googled for advice but nothing came up which I'm hoping means that its ok. I obviously won't be touching any animals or going very close to them so not sure there is any risk.

Please help put my mind at rest and give me some advice

Thanks xx

OH and I are going this Friday I can't wait, i love the zoo!

I googled too and couldn't find anything that says no. Just don't touch any reptiles if they have a close contact session as they can pass on salmonella, I think.

Also I am not going to feed the elephants or the giraffes just in case as you can feed them yourself at Colchester Zoo.

I can't wait to take Oscar next year

You cant go near lambs or sheep and like you said farm animals. Just wash your hands well if you touch anything haha not that you would be stroking the tigers!

Hi hun,

I'm sure you'll be fine to go to the zoo. I don't know what it is but it's something to do with contact with certain animals, because we took DS to a farm park recently and there were signs advising pregnant women not to feed the sheep, goats, pigs etc. So I'm sure it's only contact with animals you should be wary of. Why don't you ask your MW? I'm sure they're used to being asked bizarre questions!

Take care xxx

As far as I know, visiting a zoo is not harmful to you or your baby... I know that getting too close to sheep can have SOME consequence, but I think that's more when you get really involved in them.

So, you have a lovely day at the zoo cherub and hope the weather is good for you all!!

Yeah reptiles can pass on salmonella, I've got 2 snakes and have to be extra careful about washing my hands after handling now I'm pregnant. Not that I wasn't before of course

As far as I know, it is perfectly safe hun. Most of the animals are obviously behind bars and away from reach, but if you do go near any farm or semi-domesticated breeds such as sheep in particular then either do not touch them, or if you do, wash your hands immediately after. Otherwise you should be fine, so enjoy your day. Hope the weather holds out for you! x

As far as i'm aware its perfectly safe but to be extra careful maybe its best not to touch anything cos some animals at the zoo can be pretty stinky and you don't know where they've been! lol
Have a great day out hun
