Stupid question- maternity trousers

Oct 27th, 2014, 09:37 AM   #1

Hi ladies, this is my first pregnancy and I've got a stupid question (well actually loads but I'll stay on topic)

At about 8 weeks I was suffering badly with my ibs and very very bloated, at the time I thought I'd browse some maternity trousers for work as I've always been uncomfortable with tight waistbands.. I had a look in new look and there was only 1 pair - a size 16, and with the extra band they were just huge, anyways I freaked out and left the shop as a felt a bit of a fake for even looking.

Now nearly 15wks and I've had to stop wearing one of my usual pairs as too tight so I'm wanting to have another look but don't want to look too stupid in the shop. I've got big hips and usually wear size 12 trousers or sometimes 10 but have very skinny legs, like size 8 so I'm reluctant to go up a size in normal trousers as my legs will look daft and swamped.

My main question is, if I buy size 12 maternity trousers as my bump starts to grow will they fit now and expand along with bump? I just have no idea how they work. Thanks girls

It's not a stupid question at all. Maternity trousers can be really hit and miss. You should buy your usual size in them and they should then fit your bump as it grows. I found the over the bump ones fitted really well (from around 15 weeks) until I was 34 weeks, when I started to get really huge, then for some reason they forever needed hitching up. I think I bought 3 pairs in the end from different places and the fit was all slightly different.

Thank you that's fab! I looked online but was confused as the was no measurement of bump and I didn't know if they expanded with you. Thank you very much.

I'm usually a 10/12 depending on which shop I'm buying from and have been wearing size 12 maternity trousers (from Mothercare) since about week 20. O opted for the 12 as I don't really like anything tight around my middle either and although they seemed very roomy at first bump has gradually grown into them to fill the support band part! I only have another 4 weeks to go at work so think they will see me through until the end! xx

Just go with your normal size. From my experience the under bump ones are ok for when bump is still small but once its gets bigger I found them terribly uncomfortable and I currently live in either my over bump jeans or leggings.

Definitely invest in a pair of maternity leggings, they're so comfy!

Some people I know managed to wear there own bottoms for ages because they used a bump belt. Personally for me I found them uncomfy but if your worried about sizing especially when you're still small it might be a good option for you.

I found high street shops useless for maternity clothes, but they all tend to have a good selection online. Order a few different sizes and leg lengths and then send back the ones you don't want - most have free returns. I had to try a few different stores but found that the Next over bump jeans were the ones for me, in my normal size, which is weird because I don't normally like the fit of Next jeans, so don't be afraid to try out stores you wouldn't normally use either. It's a faff ordering lots of clothes and knowing you'll send a lot back, but I think during pregnancy it's worth it to be comfortable, particularly around the bump area.

I think you just go with your normal size. I ordered a pair of size 8 under bump maternity jeans from asos and they were huge on me (I'm a large 8 too!) I think they make them slightly larger size wise to accommodate any non tummy related weight gain xx

I ended up so bloated with my last pregnancy I was in over the bump trousers from about 10 weeks lol.

I loved my over bump jeans, they were sooooo comfy. I missed them after giving birth haha.

I always just ordered my regular size.
