Strep B in previous pregnancy.

Jun 29th, 2017, 14:46 PM   #1

I had strep B early on which was found in my urine (lucky for me) I had IV antibiotics in labour (daughter was born fine) & was told I would need them for all futures pregnancies.

However I've been told now that because my daughter was fine it's my choice whether have the swab.

Obviously I don't wanna take any risks..but felt like the consultant was trying to put me off having the swab... also if I have the swab I then HAVE to have the antibiotics which I don't understand (what if swab showed I didn't have it?) has anyone else had strep B in previous pregnancy? X

That makes no sense surely if it's negative?

I had it with my lb and he was on nicu for 3 days even though I Had antibiotics. So will deffo do the swab again. Just because she was fine that doesn't mean any future babies with gbs in the pg would be (though in all likelihood would be I'm just trying to illustrate my point!) x

My thoughts exactly. What's the need for the swab if (after having the swab) you'll be getting antibiotics either way? Lol

Silly. Despite my consultant trying to put me off, me & OH are gonna opt for the swab. My cousin's little boy caught meningitis due to her having this, not taking any chances. X

See now I haven't been told I'll have antiobiotics as a matter of course now. Must be different for different authorities. So weird! Yeah as I say my boy was seriously ill after he was born so same as you I won't be taking any chances x

I was positive with baby number 2 and wasn't even tested this time with number 3, they just gave me iv antibiotics every 4 hours until she arrived (I was induced so had 6 lots in the end!) even if you test negative one day you could be positive the Next, so really they should give you the antibiotics as a precaution regardless. X

I'm on pregnancy number 4 and with all 3 of my others I am pretty certain I was never ever tested for strep b - if i was they came back negative, but with this one they found me positive and told me I'll have to have anti-biopics through labour. It's confusing as all 3 other babies were fine. Obviously I wouldn't put this one at risk now I know I've got it, but I'm confused as to how I've got it now.

It turns out I was misinformed & obviously if no strep b shows in the swab, then antibiotics aren't necessary. I really feel like like this lady was trying to put me off! And my midwife said she was probably was. Hmmm! But now I'm worrying about not having the antibiotics in labour; even if I don't have strep b at 36 weeks I may have it when I'm in labour. Terrifying.
