Alcohol!

May 4th, 2008, 10:00 AM   #1

Are other people having the odd drink when breastfeeding? I had a bottle of beer last night and Emms has been quite windy since then. I'm not sure whether I can even have the odd one without it having an effect on bab?

What kind of thing are you guys doing?

I'm tee-total because I don't want to deal with babies and hangovers, I really can't handle my drink anymore but I had the odd drink when I was feeding my son and I personally don't think that 1 bottle of beer is going to do any harm apart from a little bit of wind. Obviously if you wanted to go out and have a session then it would be advisable to pump and dump. x

The pump and dump doesn't work, but I did used to have a drink on the nights where I knew he was sleeping through so it would have enough time to get out of my system by the morning. If you are worried, express some before your beer and use that for the next feed x

It'll be the fizz in the beer making her windy, not the alcohol, I can't have any fizzy drinks at all while BFing, I had a massive Fizzy Fanta once when I was BFing mason and it was a NIGHTMARE so now I have nothing fizzy at all

I found this on NHS direct

Quote:
Anything that you put into your body while you are pregnant or breastfeeding can have an effect on your baby. This includes alcohol.

However, research shows that occasional drinking, such as one or two units once or twice a week, is not harmful to your baby while you are breastfeeding. Drinking any more than this can cause problems, such as affecting the mother's 'let down' reflex (release of milk to the nipple area). One unit is roughly equivalent to half a pint of regular beer, a 25ml (pub) measure of spirit, or a small (125ml) glass of wine.

Alcohol clears from the mother's blood at a rate of about one unit every two hours. If you do decide to have a drink, it's a good idea to wait for a couple of hours before breastfeeding. It can be difficult to predict when your baby may want to feed, so some mothers plan ahead and express milk beforehand for special occasions where they may want to have a drink.

Moderation is key - drinking anymore than a couple of units at a time can affect the baby's development and reduce your milk supply. Small amounts of alcohol pass into breast milk, making it smell different, which may affect your baby's feeding, sleeping or digestion. To be on the safe side, some women choose to avoid alcohol altogether while they are breastfeeding.

On the odd occasion that DH and I go out for a meal or I go out. I have one small glass of wine.

I don't pump and dump becaue one unit like twice a month is absolutely fine. Ash hasn't shown any signs of being affected by it at all.

This is only since he's been about 5 months old. When he was younger I didn't have nay alcohol.

Once alcohol is in your breastmilk, it's there to stay, so it doens't matter how long you wait, the only way to get rid of it is to pump and dump. But as I say, a little bit very rarely won't do any harm.
