Hiya Ladies,

Sorry if this is in the wrong place, I figured maybe it would come under 'home life'?!

This is probably a really stupid thing to worry about but I can't get it out of my head!

I've got 3 very pampered, spoilt cats! They're very much used to being the centre of our attention (my mum reckons they're the only reason I've managed to get to 31 without feeling overly broody lol!), and obviously are going to feel quite put out once the baby arrives because they won't be getting the attention that they're used to. I've heard lots of old wives tales about cats smothering babies and things like that, (at least I think they're old wives tales?!) so realise that there has to be a separation of cats and baby but I'm at a loss as to how that's going to be done. I won't let the cats in the nursery or in our bedroom at all, but don't want to shut a door on the baby either! Has anyone had to cat-proof a room without shutting it off entirely?

Like I said, probably a silly thing to be worrying about, but there is nothing that doesn't worry me these days lol!

Oh, I've already taken the precautions I can re cats, ie no more litter tray, I don't care how cold it is, they're crapping outside! And washing hands after stroking / playing etc. I feel quite sorry for them really, they aint gonna know what's hit them lol!

 

 

Its true that cats like to sleep somewhere warm and that they could possibly snuggle up to baby/on baby resulting in smothering. I would get a cat net for the cot

 

I am in the same position as you Inky. Thats all I was worried about if the midwife decided to see me at home, that she would try to get rid of my cats. And I love them dearly.
I also wouldn't leave my baby on own with cats or let the cats near the cot ect but I didnt know you could get a cat net silly me I know
But I know now woohoo

 

We have 2 cats at home and this was something I was really worried about when I was pregnant. And I did buy the cat net for the cot. But to be honest I have never used it. When my son was new born he had his day time naps in his moses basket in the living room where I could keep an eye on him all the time if the cats where inside. And at night we keep the bedroom door closed. The reason for not using the cot net was that the net is so thick and a bit hard to see through and felt I could't keep checking up on my little baby all the time like I wanted. For me I found it easier to close the door or keep the (poor) cats out ( ) more than I used to before we had him.

Now that he is older he sleeps in the bed room with the doors closed if the cats are inside. As soon as he was old enough to start wriggling around the cats have been so scared of him that they don't go anywhere near him .

 

yer cats do like to snuggle on babies one for the attension and two because they are very warm but it can be dangerous my cat always tries to get into my kids rooms and has a few times but they are big enough to push her away i would just say make sure the cat is out of the nursery plus wouldnt want cat hairs in there anyway

 

Yeah, I figure the cats will be freaked out by the crying that they will leave well alone! I didn't know you could get cat nets, but if they're thick then I guess I'll just be shutting the cats out instead! I'm sure they will get used to it lol! I'm only worried because they're very typically curious cats and get themselves into all sorts of scrapes. I just don't want them to include the baby in any of their adventures lol!

 

The nets are like mosquito nets.

 

Maybe the one I got is just rubbish!! The net is so tightly woven on thick thread that one you can't really see through it properly...
