best tablet for kids

Mar 6th, 2018, 14:21 PM   #1

hi ladies

I'm looking for recommendations for a tablet for my daughter.

her 3rd birthday is in May and I am due baby no2 in June.

she currently has little screen time, maybe 45mins in the morning and and hour later on, we tend to be out and about but I'm sure the first few weeks of babies life I will be confined to the sofa breastfeeding.

any way I'd like something quite simple, needs to have YouTube and cbeebies. games I'm sure will come in handy when she's older

any helpful suggestions would be much appreciated

personally i'd be wary of letting a little one have unrestricted access to you tube as even with content filters there are all kinds of horrible things masquerading as preschool tv shows.

my daughter has a nabi and for safety i have uploaded certain games and videos but the rest of the time i keep the wi-fi turned off so she cant browse internet at all.

Kindle fire for kids. It hasn’t got YouTube but you don’t need it as there’s lots of video options (safe ones). Also lots of apps/games - some for fun and some educational. We got my (just turned) 3 year old one before my baby came in Dec and he’s got a lot out of it educationally and of course it’s come in handy when I’ve been consumed by a newborn at times! You can set time limits on it as well so that’s good x

thanks candy, I was looking at the kids fire but the price puts me off a bit

and thanks for the suggestion, she wouldn't have unrestricted access to YouTube, it's literally going to be while we're sitting on the couch next to each other while I breastfeed/baby naps

Would you consider getting a used one from game exchange etc? Ivy has had 3 tablets. She's so clumsy. One smashed, one got soaked in water and the last 2 I bought second hand because well, money. She had 2 galaxy tabs and a kindle fire kids.

The kindle fire kids is really great, and Cex has it for about £50 with a year guarantee . Good quality too. Same with a galaxy tab, they do really well not to slow or freeze with a load of kids apps on them. Even the 2nd hand older ones, like a galaxy tab 2, still do well for kiddies

The leap pad one is also pretty good but no youtube etc. You can get a YouTube kids app anyway that you can set to block out all those dodgy "peppa pig kills daddy pig" videos etc that those creepy weirdos make Xx

Fair play, we got it on offer so wasn’t quite as expensive. Though I find you do get what you pay for with these things - also worth pointing out it has an adult profile so you could potentially use too x

thank you, more than happy to buy second hand but the worry is that it'll be slow. we bought a laptop for farm work and just bought a cheap one as we knew it wouldn't get used loads but it's very slow

Do not buy kindle. Best buy any android tablet and you can decide what apps go on it. Kindle has so little memory you will regret buying it. Honestly - any android tablet x

Thought I replied. I get that hun, I thought the same thing but OH used to buy games from cex when he was younger and he said they were good. If you don't want a kindle a galaxy tab will still be really good, especially if it's just for dd and her little games and apps. Dd also had a lend of a random make android for a bit off her grandparents when hers broke but it made her so frustrated because it couldn't keep up with her apps.

My tab was really good and came with the years guarantee etc. People buy iPhones etc from them but totally up to you if you're comfortable with 2nd hand electronics. Laptops I think can be a little dodgier though. You can always take it back and say it's not working properly with the guarantee. Or ask before you buy what their terms are regarding items being super slow. xx

We got my (then) 4 year old the standard Kindle Fire HD last Christmas with the blue back.

This year for Christmas he got so much more and more money spent on him than the damn tablet and Id say its still up there with the most used toys and I paid £50 for it.

It has the option for Youtube - however it has the option of parental controls and as it runs through amazon user you are able to view all apps downloaded. (I view them in my orders) plus it will e-mail me if a new app is installed on the Fire.

The Parental Control on the Kindle allows you to set a password so that nothing else - app, game, expansion whatever can be downloaded without your say so.

As long as she is being supervised and then I don't see the issue with allowing her on Youtube. His Kindle Fire also actually has a Youtube Kids.

In the 2 years that my son has been using tablets - he has been supervised, parental locked and we have had no issue of anything inappropriate wander to our screens.

As for the memory, he's 4. He doesn't need screeds and screeds of files saved on it - he has toys and other activities so shouldn't have a full tablet imo.

The KF HD also does not allow any browse net page. So it has no safari etc which I guess can be a pain for adults, but means they wont be online on explorer. The categorized home page actually encourages my son to read books from the Kindle Library.

Weigh up the price, durability and suitability for both you and your child.

xxx
