Formula causing bad wind? Help haha...

Jun 28th, 2017, 12:18 PM   #1

Ok so I posted a thread maybe a week ago asking about stopping breastfeeding and moving my 8 month old daughter onto formula. We've had no issues with the swap and Aela now has formula for all 3 of her milk feeds during the day (just after breakfast, afternoon and Bedford bed).

She now falls asleep without the boob for both naps during the day, and the same for her bedtime with a little more persistence my issue now is her night times! I'm not sure if it's just bad timing and she's at her 8 month sleep regression or if the formula is to blame but she will sleep from about 7.30 until 11 and wakes at 11 every night for the past 4 nights and doesn't want to go back down until 2. From there she is awake every 2 hours with really bad wind! Like pumps that are so big they sound sore.

If I was to guess myself I would imagine it's a mix of both! She's on aptamil milk and a tommee Tippee bottle with medium flow teat.

Any advice for sleep regression/formula wind would be greatly appreciated!!

It's more likely to be the bottle. I started with pumped milk in tommee tippee and then formula in them to find out they don't vent very well despite them advertised as anti colic bottles. Even when my son was 8 months old and I bought one that could be a cup and a bottle I tried again and it made him vomit so bad because of how shit they really are. I'm always baffled how there seem to be people who get on with them as most often people use these and have baby's that struggle with their wind. I then went on to try avent but the flow was too fast on them for my little one. So as he had the mam dummies I ended up with mam. In my opinion big mistake as for the last four years I had no luck getting him off them and for all that time he's been stuck on the 2 month flow which at times have been an absolute pain to find. Not to start with the daft ring inside the bottle I eventually had to re order of their website because at some point they were out and milk pours from the bottom.. it happens when it's not put in right too. And with drops of water left from washing or cooling them down in cold water the venting system don't work as well.. I've seen first hand that dr browns are the go to bottles for many people who tried several brands and ended up getting them anyway. Aptamil is fine milk, my son drank it for a while after I found the hipp one getting too expensive and my son had terrible terrible wind for months if not years X

It's worth thinking about swapping the milk as some babies don't get on with certain brands. My lo only did a poo every 2/3 days on Aptamil and when he did it was a huge runny, all the way up his back and out of his legs jobby which was an absolute nightmare. Ruined loads of clothes and always worried about him going when we were out as it was such a mess. His poos on his usual formula, Hipp, were more regular, smaller and normal texture. So formula can definitely affect the bowels/digestion in different ways.

Having said that though if it's wind I'd be more tempted to try different bottles. I found the same as JD and didn't get on with TT bottles despite them being very popular, we use Dr Browns x

Well I had a good read online and decided to change her formula to hipp organic follow on, my god what a difference! Perfect sleep only waking once, so I would hands down say it was the aptamil to blame! She is waaay less windy than she has been. It defo wasn't her bottle, we were using medela bottles and I changed to the tommee tippee to see if this was causing the wind and it made no difference. Changed her formula and we're back to normal nights

Thanks ladies! Xx

I've used hipp too for the first two years, it's a very fine formula. I just have no good words about SMA as that caused constipation only used aptamil and c&g after hipp became too expensive when he was two lol x
