Girl names, so stuck!

Dec 23rd, 2017, 11:46 AM   #1

So we have a Scottish surname beginning with M. We have two boys, Ross and Lewis. We named the daughter we lost Oirrinn.
They all have Scottish origins, Oirrinn is a waterfall in the Highlands.
I'd like a name with Scottish links for this baby, but nothing too complicated where spelling or pronunciation would always be an issue.
I like Ella but worry it is very common (though Lewis is too). I also like Ellis, Ayla and Eloise (not all Scottish I know!).
We cannot have Isla, far too common in our family alone we have three.
So there you go, inspire me please!!

Isobel

(I have it on our list. Although I prefer the Isabelle spelling)

I think Ellis is lovely though.

We're completely stuck too. It's so hard.

I love it too but my husband has an aunt isobel and she's not a lovely person. :/
I also love Beth, my mil is Elizabeth known as liz and my gran was Elizabeth known as Betty. But... My manager has a 9month old daughter called Beth, we're good friends and I don't know if that would be weird. I do love Ellis too.
It is really tough isn't it!! I think it's more of a challenge now to fit in with the boys names too.

You could still have Elizabeth but just not use the shortening Beth.

For fear of being a complete copycat Elizabeth is on our list *but* its Bee's middle name so I don't think we could use it? I would also want it to actually be Elizabeth and not a shortened version.

Eilidh is a possibility, my husband likes Hayley so this would be somewhere in the middle.
So I like Beth but not Elizabeth, my fil calls my mil her given name at times so it's a bit close.
I've also just seen a WhatsApp from an antenatal group I attended once, the first to be born is...... Ellis!!! Not going to let that put me off though, I don't really know any of them.

You could have Ceilidh?

How about Bethany which removes Beth further from Elizabeth?

Heather is on our list actually!! I still do love Beth. My ex manager but good friend called her now 9month daughter Beth. We're not in the same circle of friends though. I feel like I'd have to ask her permission of sorts.

Bethany is my daughter's name, and Ellis is our surname! Both really lovely names. There was a Bethany at school and she decided to shorten it to Betty.

Juice, how funny is that having two of our favourite names already!!
I'm not much further forward, I suppose I need to properly narrow down and wait for baby to arrive!

What about Mairi? It’s a Scottish form of Mary. I know a young girl with this name and think it’s beautiful. Think it’s likely to go with an M surname too.

My youngest is called Erraid (Eh-rid) which is a small island off the coast of Mull. Named her as she was born the year the commonwealth games were held in glasgow and there was a young young girl swimming for Scotland. I loved the name, and our choices were loosing popularity with me.
It's uncommon but not completely out there that people look at you funny. We have had a few strange pronunciations but nothing that bothers us.
We love her name and how unique it is to her, she is a little red head too so it suits her to a T.
