I went in in labour and ended up having an emergency c-section the same day (9pm on a Thursday) I was then discharged from hospital on Saturday with baby.

I highly recommend packing big granny pants as bikini briefs etc.. Sit right on the scar line of a c-sec. They were a life saver

Five days for us as LO was on antibiotics due to an infection.

The main thing I needed more of was clothes and maternity towels. I had to send OH to the shop for extra which no doubt has scarred him for life!

I'd suggest packing a bag for 2-3 days and then having an emergency standby drawer or shelf at home to put extra stuff on, so if you're in longer it's just a matter of telling OH bring such and such from the drawer/shelf.

Yep I'd pack for 2/3 nights!

Light button up nighties - massive comfy granny pants and loads of maternity pads! Drinks and snacks

Posting here Tinselcat as it's kinda the same question, hope you don't mind!

I've been told by the midwife that runs the aquanatals that for a 1st time mum that has a straight forward vaginal delivery you are kept in for a minimum of 2 nights I'm not too happy about that as I thought I'd be able to leave that day or the following (all being well) but apparently that's only for subsequent births. Can anyone enlighten me re this with their experiences? x

I think they just like to make sure LO is feeding ok etc. I know with my LO I had to religiously fill out a form of when he fed, how much and also his nappies. They also give you a fetching colour chart to compare their poo against

I am a first time Mum and wasn't in hospital long. Went in around Midnight Saturday, little one was born at 5am Sunday morning (natural delivery/water birth) and we were home by 2.30pm on the same day. Half of that time was waiting around for the doctors to stitch up my 2nd degree tear and I was only on the postnatal ward about 3 hours. They were very busy though so maybe trying to clear people out-fine with me.
Probably best to pack for 2 days just in case as you never know, any more and someone can bring you extras x

There are many factors why they would keep you in. If baby isn't feeding properly they won't let you go until that is sorted.
But if you're well and so is baby there is no reason to be in longer than necessary.

I was in with my first for 2 nights as she wouldn't feed.
With dd2 I had baby at 4pm and was home by 9pm. She was feeding well and delivery was straight forward.

Went in at 9am on the Tuesday [after already being in early labour since Sunday night ] had baby at 1am on the Wednesday but due to how long it all took etc they wanted him in for 24h ob's. They actually didn't let us go until 3pm on the Thursday. So I was in well over 48h, 36h of them post having baby!

Hoping they kick me out after deliver this time

Can hubby not get back to pick up extra bits if needed?

We took two bags as well, one for me and one for baby!

Sorry, never heard of this!

* Although most people I know had "difficult" first time births and ended up being in for a few days for XYZ reason! (medical and now down to feeding)

Even with a few issues (baby had low APGAR score initially, it being over 24h between waters going and baby arriving, extended pushing time) they only wanted us in for 24h for OB's?

Due to time of day I had him though it ended up being 36h.

X

Went in 9 am Thursday and came home early Monday afternoon. Had waters broken at 5 pm then Elara was assisted into the world with forceps at 5 am Friday. My stay probably wouldn't have been as long as it was if I didn't need a transfusion, which they gave me very early hours Monday morning. I had to nag for them to do blood tests to make sure I was fine to leave otherwise the stay probably would have been an extra day or so.

My first was natural, gave birth at about 8pm, but only left the next morning as I couldn't walk. If I had been able to walk, we would have left a couple hours after the birth. 2nd was a c-section and stayed 3 nights. xxx
