pregnancy without NI number

Jan 4th, 2013, 21:34 PM   #1

Hi Ladies,

I have a very urgent question.
I have a friend who has just arrived in England and discovered her pregnancy. She and her partner have job but they have not Ni number yet. They`ve got a appointment in the Jobcenter, but unfortunatly 2 months later. The question is that, is there any chance she get medical service (or what is called) during her pregnancy without NI number?
They said she is probably in the second months. Can she wait for NI number or better to go back to her own country now. But...I know her and she is very nice and came from very bad circumstances. I would say if it is not necassary to see a doctor during this two months better for them to stay. But I am not expert...what advice could you give her????

If she is here legally and has the right to work here then she should already have an NI number, how does she pay tax etc otherwise?

I'm not sure what the rules are regarding registering with a dr practice - I would advise her to ring up dr surgery and ask. I'm pretty sure she'll be entitled to medical care though - aren't people who holiday here entitled to medical care?

Is she here legally? Why has she no NI? If she doesn't have this then it's illegal to work.

I am also unsure on the NHS rules, however I did see something on TV where a couple came to the UK to visit family and ended up with a 60k bill from the NHS. In the end the country the couple where original from paid these fees.

You can't have a job without NI so this is illegal. ..if you do get your national insurance number sorted then yes there is help and the nhs.

It not always illegal to work without an NI. We have lots of people who are employed that I set pensions up for who have temporary NINOs until their permanent ones come through or some people who have none at all. Is she from the EU?

Yes my ni number spplication was delayed and it took 5/6 month for me to get one. You cant receive any ni paid income or benefits without one but you can apply for an nhs number by registering with the local nhs doctor that accepts new patients and receive healthcare!

When she is registered with gp she can apply for a maternity exemption card so she doesnt need to pay or any prescriptions. I am from a eu country and i do hold a british nationality but i didnt held a nino myself and i received healthcare prior to obtaining my number and i was also accepted for a job which wasnt illegal. As far as im concerned s long as you dont hold a nino you do not have to pay council tax.
